Abstract
Thedouble-sidedstructureofaverylargecrudecarrier(VLCC)cargoholdwaschosenas
theresearchobject.Thenonlinearfiniteelementcode,MSC.Dytranwasappliedtoinvestigatenumericallythecollisiondamagemechanismandcrashworthinessofthisstructureunderfullloadand
ballastconditions.Andthecorrespondingparameters,includingfluid-structureinteractionpressure,
collisionforce,deformationandenergyabsorbing,werecomputedandcomparedwiththeresultsunderlightloadconditions.
Theresultsshowthattheliquidcargoaffectstoacertainextentthestructuraldamagedeformationandcollisionforceinthelaterstageofcollisi
nbutinfluencesweaklythe
wholecrashworthinessofthisstructure.Ballastwaterhasremarkableeffectondamagemechanism,
crashworthinessperformanceanddeformationpatterns.Thefluid-structureinteractionforcecancause
significantchangesindeformationpatterns,remarkableincreaseinimpactforceandenergyabsorption,
evidentimproveincrashworthiness.
