Abstract
Inordertopreventandcontrolindustrialdustexplosionandimprovetheaccuracyofdust
explosiontests,anexperimentalresearchwascarriedouttohaveaninsightintotheexplosionbehaviorofhigh-
andlow-volatiledustsinducedbydifferentignitionenergiesbyusingaSiwek20Lsphericalexplosiontestsystem.
Ignitionenergyeffectondustexplosionbrisance(max.explosionpressure,
max.pressurerisingrateandcombustionduration)andsensitivity (lowerexplosionlimit)andthe
variationofexplosionsuppressioneffectivenessofinertsubstancealongwiththeignitionenergywere
explored.Resultsshowthathigherignitionenergyimprovestheexplosionenergyreleaseandcombustionrateofdustcloud;
theeffectofignitionenergyonexplosionbehaviorismoresignificantforless
volatiledust.Incompletedeflagrationoflow-volatiledustundertheconditionoflowignitionenergy
resultsintheadverseeffectofexplosion.Theadverseeffectofexplosionbecomesinconspicuousas
thedustconcentrationincreases.Thelowerexplosionlimitdecreasessharplywiththeriseofignition
energyforlow-volatiledust,whilethelowerexplosionlimitofhigh-volatiledustisnotsosensitiveto
ignitionenergy.Moreover,explosionsuppressioneffectivenessofinertsubstancedecreaseswiththe
riseofignitionenergy.Theignitionenergyof5~10kJisthemostappropriateforunderstandingthe
lowerexplosionlimitoflow-volatiledustandtheexplosionsuppressioneffectivenessofinertsubstance.
Theaboveresultsmaybevaluableforunderstandingthedustexplosioncharacteristicsand
completingthecurrentdustexplosioncharacteristicstestandsafetydesign.
