Abstract
Thefiniteelementsoftware,ABAQUS/Explicit,wasusedtonumericallyanalyzetheplasticdamageevolutionofatypicalconcretegravitydamsmonolithbyconsideringthefluid-
structure couplingbetweenthedamandthewateraswellasthetensionandcompressiondamageintheconcrete.
Thewaterwassimulatedbyusinganacousticelement.Theresultsshowthatthereexistthree
potentialfailuremodesinthedam.Besidesthefailureneartheexplosionlocation,anoversizedamage
rangeofthedambasemaycausethedamslideoreventilttowardsthedownstream.Thetilttowards
thedownstreamoftheabutment,whichiscausedbylocalfailureorfracture,mayleadtoadecrease
ofthedamswaterretainingheightandovertopping.Andthelocalrein
