Abstract
Thecouplingofsmoothedparticlehydrodynamics(SPH)withthefiniteelementmethod
(FEM)ispresentedtomakefulluseofthesuperiorityofSPHindealingwithlargedeformationand
thehighaccuracyofFEM.ThecoupledSPH-FEMalgorithmemploysSPHparticlesinthehigherdistortionregionsandfiniteelementsinthelowerdistortionregions.
Inthecoupledinterface,SPHparticlesareattachedtofiniteelements.
BackgroundparticlesareassignedinthepositionofFEnodes,
andFEnodesareaddedtoSPHneighborlist.TheboundaryeffectofSPHisavoided,andthecontinuityoftheinterfaceisguaranteed.
Theperforationofacylindricalsteelprojectileimpactingaplate
targetissimulatedin3DusingthecoupledSPH-FEMalgorithm.TheJohnson-Cookmaterialmodel
withdamageeffectandGrneisenequationofstateareemployedforthetarget,andthecomputedresultsshowgoodagreementwiththeexperimentaldata.
