Abstract
Anexplicitexpressionforthestrain-rateeffectontheuniaxialtensilestrengthofbrittlematerialsunderdynamicloadingswasderivedbysolvingthewaveequationtogetherwiththes
-calledfinitestructural-
timefailurecriterion.Itisshownthatthereisanobviousstructuralresponsecharacteristicforthedynamicstrength;
thatis,apartfromonthestrainrateandthestaticmaterialconstants,
itdependsremarkablyontheloadingaswellastheinteractionbetweentheloadingfeatures
andthematerial,andthusthedynamicstrengthcannotbeoneoftheintrinsicmaterialproperties.
Moreover,itisalsofoundthatthepreviousexperimentaldatashouldhaveintrinsicallyhighdiscretenessbecausethedynamicstrengthsofmaterialattaind
fferentvaluesunderdifferentloadings.
