Abstract
Inordertoinvestigatetheimpactcompressiveresponseofconfineddrysand,thedynamic
compressionexperimentsofdrysandatdifferenthighstrainratesanddifferentpreloadswereconductedonthemodifiedsplitHopkinsonpressureb
r(SHPB)withathinrubbercircularplateasapulse
shaper.Quasi-staticcompressivepropertiesofthesandwereobtainedwithaMTS810materialstest
system.Thematerialstudiedinthisresearchissilicabasedgrainsand,mostsandparticlesareinthe
diameterrangefrom150to245m.Thedensityofthedrysandmaterialis1.40kg/m3withoutpreload.
Theresultsshowthatthecompressionresponseofthedrysandisnotsensitivetostrainrate,
butsignificantlydependentonthepreload.
